Arthur E. Brainerd (1885-1974), a geologist, was a professor and head of the geology department at Syracuse University before joining the geology department of Empire Gas and Fuel Company. In the early 1920s, he was a field geologist for Marland Oil Company. After Marland merged with Continental Oil Company (Conoco), Brainerd was named Regional Geologist for the Rocky Mountain area.
